Where to stay in Vienna: the 9 best neighbourhoods to stay

Vienna is divided into 23 districts known as Bezirke. District 1 corresponds to the historic city centre (Innere Stadt) while the remaining districts spread out in a ring around it. Below you will find my recommendations by area for staying in Vienna, with extra information about each district:

1. Neubau (7th district), my favorite area in Vienna

Neubau is a neighbourhood full of colour, art and historic buildings. It is known for its museums such as the Leopold Museum and the Museum of Modern Art (MUMOK), as well as its many art galleries and quirky shops.

Every time I visited Vienna, I stayed in the Neubau area because it combines:
💶 more reasonable prices
✨ a great vibe
🚇 good connections to the rest of the city
☕ plenty of options for food and drinks

I stayed at the Arte Hotel Wien Stadthalle. Generally, Vienna has excellent public transport. A daily ticket costs around €8 and a single trip €2.40.

2. Innere Stadt (1st district), in the heart of Vienna

This is the historic centre of Vienna, packed with sights like St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Vienna State Opera and the Hofburg Palace. Close to everything, luxury shops and restaurants. Hotels:

🛌🏻 Grand Hotel Wien
🛌🏻 Vienna Marriott Hotel
🛌🏻 Hotel Bristol
🛌🏻 Boutique Hotel Nosse

3. Leopoldstadt (2nd district)

Leopoldstadt is close to the centre and home to the Prater park with Vienna’s famous Ferris wheel. Ideal for picnics and cycling.

🛌🏻 Hotel Stefanie
🛌🏻 Bassena Wien Messe Prater
🛌🏻 25hours Hotel at MuseumsQuartier

4. Mariahilf (6th district)

Mariahilf is known for the Mariahilfer Strasse pedestrian zone, one of the city’s biggest shopping streets. Perfect for shopping and very close to the centre.

🛌🏻 Mercure Hotel Raphael Wien
🛌🏻 Jaz in the City Vienna

+1 budget-friendly option Ibis Wien Mariahilf

🛌🏻 Hotel Daniel Vienna

6. Wieden (4th district)

Wieden is very close to the centre with beautiful architecture, including Belvedere Palace.

🛌🏻 Hotel Erzherzog Rainer

7. Alsergrund (9th district)

Alsergrund is home to the University of Vienna and the Sigmund Freud Museum.

🏛️ A lively area with students, bars and cafes.

🛌🏻 Hotel Calmo
🛌🏻 Hotel Mozart
🛌🏻 Hotel Bellevue Wien

8. Josefstadt (8th district)

Josefstadt is a quiet neighbourhood with historic buildings and picturesque streets, close to the centre.

🛌🏻 Hotel Rathaus Wein & Design
🛌🏻 The Levante Parliament

9. Döbling (17th district)

Döbling is more picturesque and a bit further from the centre. Ideal if you are travelling for 5-6+ days and want to combine sightseeing with relaxation.

 Views of the Danube
🍇 Vineyards and traditional Heuriger wine taverns.

🛌🏻 Ibis Styles Wien City
🛌🏻 Müllner Smart Hotel Wien Self Check In

Your choice of area depends on the kind of experience you want. If you want to be close to the tourist sights, Innere Stadt and Mariahilf are ideal. If you prefer something more relaxed and quiet, Döbling is an excellent choice. Now that you know where to stay, book your flights and explore the best sights in Vienna up close!
